Doorstop interview on Tanjong Katong Road South Sinkhole Incident - Ms Grace Fu
29 July 2025
Transcript of doorstop interview by Ms Grace Fu, Minister for Sustainability and the Environment and Minister-in-Charge of Trade Relations, on the Tanjong Katong South sinkhole incident on 29 July 2025.
A sinkhole was formed along Tanjong Katong Road South last Saturday. It was a serious incident, and it should not have happened.
2 On behalf of MSE and PUB, I would like to extend my sincere apologies to the injured driver for the injury suffered, as well as for going through a harrowing experience, and to the members of public as well as residents in the vicinity for causing anxiety and unease, and also to the motorists and commuters who have suffered inconveniences from the road closure and diversion.
3 PUB will cooperate fully with BCA in its investigation. I have also instructed MSE to form an internal investigation panel to look into the cause of this incident. In the meantime, we have called a safety timeout for PUB to review all its construction projects in Singapore of similar nature.
4 The priority of the team now is to restore the road as well as ensure public safety. My colleagues in PUB have been working very hard, round the clock to ensure that we can do that safely and quickly. So they have done many scans, many probes, many tests, to verify ground stability.
5 We are going through a very thorough and rigorous safety assessment, and until we are satisfied with that, we will not open the road. We will do so when we have ascertained that it is safe to do so. So perhaps for a few more days, we may have to cause some inconveniences to the motorists and the commuters because of the closure.
