Launch of ReHub for School Recycling League - Ms Goh Hanyan
6 October 2025
Remarks by Ms Goh Hanyan, Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Sustainability and the Environment, at the launch of ReHub for School Recycling League on 6 October 2025
I'm so happy to be here at Mee Toh School today! We're here to celebrate something very special – the launch of REhub. This is part of the Cora School Recycling League and helps us get ready for Clean & Green Singapore Day on 1st November 2025.
Today is a very important day because we're bringing together cool new ideas, learning, and teamwork to help Singapore become a place with zero waste!
WHY RECYCLING MATTERS IN SINGAPORE
Singapore is a small island with lots of people living here. Because we don't have much space, we need to be very clever about how we use everything around us. We try to make sure nothing gets wasted by turning old things into new things.
For example, when you finish reading a book or magazine, that paper can be made into new notebooks or boxes. When factories make drinks, the leftover bits can become food for animals. It's like a big circle where everything gets used again and again!
This is really important for Singapore because we only have one place to put rubbish that can't be recycled – it's called Semakau Landfill, and it's already more than half full! We need to reduce our rubbish, reuse things when we can, and recycle properly so this special place lasts longer.
The most important thing is to "Recycle Right." When we put the right things in recycling bins and keep them clean, they can become new useful things instead of just being thrown away.
CLEAN & GREEN SINGAPORE AND OUR PARTNERS
For more than 30 years, Clean & Green Singapore has been helping people in Singapore take care of our environment by living in ways that keep our country clean and green.
I'm really excited that Cora Environment is working with us to make this happen. They're helping to bring REhub to schools all around Singapore.
Cora Environment is a company that's really good at finding new ways to help our environment. Two years ago, they started the Cora School Recycling League, and now over 400 schools are part of it! This helps teachers teach you about taking care of our planet, and helps you learn how your actions can make a difference.
Today's REhub launch is helping Singapore become even better at reusing things. These special smart bins can tell us how much recycling is happening, and schools can have fun competitions between classes. Each bin has a clever sensor that tells Cora Environment when it's getting full, so they know exactly when to come and collect everything. REhub isn't just a bin – it's a tool that helps make recycling a habit and uses technology to teach us about the environment.
FINAL THOUGHTS
I want to say well done to Cora Environment, NEA, Sembcorp Energy for Good, and schools like Mee Toh for working together. We believe it's important to learn good recycling habits when you're young. When everyone works together like this, we can encourage young people, families, and everyone in our community to reduce, reuse, and recycle. This helps each person make a big difference in creating a Singapore where everything gets used again and again. I'm excited to see how REhub will help even more schools!
To all the students at Mee Toh School, you are the first ones to try this amazing new system! Every time you recycle something, you're helping to make Singapore cleaner and greener for your younger brothers and sisters, and for children who haven't even been born yet. Remember that even small things you do can create big changes!
Let's all keep working together to think differently about rubbish, find new ways to use old things, and create a Singapore that takes better care of our planet.
Thank you!
