Minister for Sustainability and the Environment and Minister-in-Charge of Trade Relations Grace Fu, will be visiting London, United Kingdom (UK) and Paris, France from 1 to 5 June 2026. During the visit, Minister Fu will engage with nuclear regulators, experts and technology providers.
While Singapore has not made a decision on the deployment of nuclear energy, it is building the capabilities needed to make a rigorous and independent assessment on the safety of nuclear energy. These engagements support Singapore’s broader efforts to strengthen international partnerships and capabilities in nuclear safety and regulation, as well as nuclear talent development, amid growing regional interest in nuclear energy.
London, United Kingdom
In London, Minister Fu will observe the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the National Environment Agency (NEA) and the UK Office of Nuclear Regulation (ONR) and meet with ONR representatives to understand their efforts in assessing the safety of new reactor technologies. The MOU facilitates the exchange of information and expertise on nuclear safety regulation, including new reactor technologies and safety research. Minister Fu will also visit Rolls-Royce to learn about the safety of its Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technology and engage Singapore scholars pursuing nuclear-related studies in London.
Paris, France
In Paris, Minister Fu will meet with senior representatives of ASNR (Autorité de sûreté nucléaire et de radioprotection), and Western European Nuclear Regulators Association (WENRA) to exchange views on advancements in nuclear energy technology, developments in safety assessments and regulatory standards and explore collaborations in nuclear safety and capability building.
Strengthening Capabilities in Nuclear Safety
As part of Singapore’s longstanding efforts to build capabilities in nuclear safety, Singapore engages partners with extensive experience in the safe operation and regulation of nuclear plants1. More recently, NEA signed a Memorandum of Cooperation (MOC) with the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission on Regulatory Skills Development. Singapore has also signed its fourth Country Programme Framework with the International Atomic Energy Agency to enhance capabilities in assessing the suitability of new energy technologies, strengthen environmental radiation monitoring, food radiochemistry and safety testing, and advance the quality and safety of nuclear imaging and cancer therapy.
Minister Fu will be accompanied by officials from the Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment, and the National Environment Agency.
