Singapore and Indonesia signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Environmental Cooperation on 29 June 2026 to strengthen bilateral collaboration on environmental sustainability.
Singapore and Indonesia signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Environmental Cooperation to strengthen bilateral collaboration on environmental sustainability. The MoU was signed by Singapore's Minister for Sustainability and the Environment and Minister-in-charge of Trade Relations, Grace Fu, and Indonesia's Minister of Environment/Head of the Environmental Control Agency, Dr Mohammad Jumhur Hidayat.
The MoU provides a framework for Singapore and Indonesia to strengthen cooperation on environmental issues and address shared environmental challenges. Under the MoU, both countries will collaborate in key areas including circular economy and waste management; environmental management, including water and air quality; climate change; transboundary pollution; and a future-ready workforce to support the transition to a low-carbon economy.
Minister Jumhur reaffirmed Indonesia's strong commitment to strengthening regional collaboration amid increasingly complex environmental challenges. "Today, we signed a MoU with the Government of Singapore, which will be followed by more concrete and operational forms of cooperation. This MoU serves as an overarching framework for our partnership, under which we will undertake a wide range of joint initiatives, including cooperation on climate change, waste management, air pollution control, and efforts to address the impacts of the increasingly prolonged El Niño phenomenon," said Minister Jumhur.
Minister Fu said "There are many areas in the environment space where we can collaborate with Indonesia, such as circular economy, waste management, environmental management, transboundary pollution and climate change. I look forward to this MoU being a start of many conversations to come at both the government and private sector level, where both countries will focus on implementation and specific areas of cooperation.”
To support the implementation of the MoU, Singapore and Indonesia will cooperate through technical exchanges, joint studies and projects, capacity building, and conduct ministerial and senior official-level dialogues to guide and advance bilateral collaboration.
The MoU reflects the strong partnership between Singapore and Indonesia, and underscores both countries’ commitment to working together to achieve sustainable development and a more resilient future.
