Written Reply to Parliamentary Question on cold-chain storage regulations for food retailers by Ms Grace Fu, Minister for Sustainability and the Environment.
Question:
Ms Joan Pereira: To ask the Minister for Sustainability and the Environment (a) whether the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) conducts routine temperature and compliance checks on perishable cold-chain foods displayed at wet markets and retail outlets; (b) what measures are in place to ensure retailers adhere to cold-chain storage regulations; and (c) what enforcement actions are taken against non-compliant food retailers.
Answer:
The Singapore Food Agency inspects licensed wet market stalls and retail outlets to ensure that perishable foods, such as frozen meat and dairy products, are kept at the appropriate temperatures. The Environmental Public Health (Food Hygiene) Regulations prescribes the cold-chain and food storage requirements that licensed retail food businesses must adhere to, to ensure food safety, such as to install and properly maintain temperature gauges for all refrigerators and chillers.
Failure to maintain proper cold-chain and food storage conditions may be subject to a fine not exceeding $2,000, upon conviction.
