Written Reply to Parliamentary Question on Effectiveness of BCRS by Ms Grace Fu, Minister for Sustainability and the Environment.

Question:

Mr Kwek Hian Chuan Henry: To ask the Minister for Sustainability and the Environment what are the projected (i) net savings in public waste disposal costs and (ii) net reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from the Beverage Container Return Scheme over its first five years, after accounting for the costs and emissions associated with collecting and recycling the containers.                   

Answer:

As the Return Right Beverage Container Return Scheme (BCRS) has just been fully implemented last month, it is still too early to gauge the overall effectiveness of the scheme. The steady state costs and environmental impact of the scheme will be clearer as scheme operations scale up and stabilise.
