Written Reply to Parliamentary Question on the volume of food imports and disposal by Ms Grace Fu, Minister for Sustainability and the Environment.

Question:

Mr Cai Yinzhou: To ask the Minister for Sustainability and the Environment (a) in each of the last three years (i) what is the volume of fibre, comprising fresh vegetables and related produce, imported into Singapore (ii) how much surplus produce is redistributed or rescued through food-support channels (iii) how much such produce is discarded; and (b) whether the Singapore Food Agency or NEA tracks fibre loss across the supply chain from import to disposal.

Answer:

Over the last three years, Singapore imported an average of 560,000 tonnes of fibre per year, comprising fresh vegetables and related produce.  

Over the same period, an average of 639,000 tonnes of food waste was disposed of each year. This refers to all types of food discarded, including inedible portions such as egg shells and bones, and is not limited to fresh vegetables and related produce. The amount of food that is redistributed or rescued, as well as fibre loss across the supply chain, are not tracked by agencies.
