Written Reply to Parliamentary Question on Market Access for Local Farms by Ms Grace Fu, Minister for Sustainability and the Environment.

Question:

Ms Lee Hui Ying: To ask the Minister for Sustainability and the Environment following the recent removal of locally grown vegetables from the shelves of a large supermarket chain (a) what assessment has been made of the impact on our food resilience; and (b) what measures are being considered to strengthen market access for local farms.

Answer:

The impact on food resilience from FairPrice’s delisting of vegetables from certain local farms is limited.

The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) is assisting the affected farms to access a wider and more diverse range of buyers including online platforms, and through the Singapore Agro-Food Enterprises Federation Limited (SAFEF).

SFA will continue to work closely with the industry to strengthen demand offtake. This includes promoting local produce through the SG Fresh Produce (SGFP) logos and recognising food businesses in the hotel, restaurant and catering (HoReCa) sector that procure local produce through the Farm-to-Table Recognition Programme (FTTRP). Consumers can also do their part by choosing to purchase local produce or dining at food businesses under the FTTRP.
