Written Reply to Parliamentary Question on the proposed merger of the western islands and how this might affect Semakau Landfill, by Ms Grace Fu, Minister for Sustainability and the Environment.

Questions:

Mr Dennis Tan Lip Fong: To ask the Minister for Sustainability and the Environment regarding the proposed merger of the western islands (a) how will Semakau Landfill operations be affected; (b) whether its projected lifespan to 2035 and beyond remains unchanged; and (c) whether a site for a successor landfill has been identified.

Ms Cassandra Lee: To ask the Minister for Sustainability and the Environment given the projection that Semakau Landfill will reach full capacity around 2035 (a) how will this factor into the Government’s planning for the proposed western island; and (b) whether the proposed reclamation will depend on, or be affected by, decisions on the future use or closure of the landfill.

Combined Answer:

The National Environment Agency (NEA) will work with the relevant agencies on the future plans for Semakau Landfill. It will continue to pursue measures to extend the lifespan of Semakau Landfill through waste reduction, recycling, and the reuse of waste residues.
