Written Reply to Parliamentary Question on Projected Lifespan of Semakau Landfill by Ms Grace Fu, Minister for Sustainability and the Environment.
Question:
To ask the Minister for Sustainability and the Environment (a) whether the projected lifespan of Semakau Landfill remains valid given current waste generation and recycling trends; and (b) what long-term options exist once Semakau Landfill reaches full capacity even after efforts to extend its lifespan.
Answer:
Based on current waste disposal rates, Semakau Landfill will reach full capacity around 2035.
In addition to measures and initiatives to promote recycling and reduce waste generation, the National Environment Agency is exploring solutions to repurpose waste residues such as incineration ash. This includes the recovery and processing of landfilled materials for land reclamation.
