Written Reply to Parliamentary Question on Segregated Waste Collection by Ms Grace Fu, Minister for Sustainability and the Environment.
Question:
To ask the Minister for Sustainability and the Environment whether (a) the Ministry has plans to implement segregated waste collection; and (b) NEA will consider licensing more Public Waste Collectors beyond the current three companies.
Answer:
The government has been progressively implementing segregated waste collection, starting with e-waste in 2021, and food waste generated from new large industrial and commercial buildings in 2024. In 2026, we will extend segregated collection to beverage containers. We will continue to review and implement segregated waste collection where appropriate to complement our National Recycling Programme.
Public Waste Collectors (PWCs) are appointed by the National Environment Agency through open tenders for each of the six geographical sectors in Singapore. Participation in these tenders is open to all companies that fulfil the experience and capacity requirements, and the successful tenderers are selected based on merit. We do not limit the number of PWCs to three.
