Written Reply to Parliamentary Question on Smoking in Public Walkways

Question:

Mr Dennis Tan Lip Fong: To ask the Minister for Sustainability and the Environment whether NEA will consider new measures to discourage smoking while walking along public walkways, such as designated smoking points or public education campaigns focused on second-hand smoke on the move, to minimise the impact on non-smoking pedestrians and enhance the air quality of shared public transit routes.

Answer:

Smoking is currently prohibited in more than 49,000 public places in order to reduce the public’s exposure to second-hand tobacco smoke. These places include covered or underground pedestrian walkways and common areas of residential buildings. Enforcement will be taken against offenders caught smoking while in these areas. The National Environment Agency will also continue to undertake public education on smoking restrictions and encourage community-led designated smoking points where appropriate.
