William Liew
Energy & Climate Policy Division, MSE
“My experience working within the MSE family of agencies in the past 12 years has provided me with numerous opportunities to grow, learn and develop as an officer and an individual. Across my 4 different jobs in the family, I’ve had the chance to get involved in a wide variety of fields and domains; from securing Singapore’s water security and resilience, to exploring new technologies and solutions in pursuit of a circular economy and harnessing resource synergies, and delving into the intricacies of climate science and weather forecasting in an era of anthropogenic climate change. There are many facets of working in environment and sustainability to explore for the curious and adventurous.
I’ve had the pleasure of working with economists, behavioural scientists, public health experts, climate scientists, biologists and various types of engineers, all of whom come together, and combine their talents to tackle complex, interdisciplinary challenges and issues for the betterment of Singapore and Singaporeans.
I’ve also benefited from continuous career development in this journey. I’ve had the opportunity to explore depth in new areas and fields outside my initial training; through a formal secondment out of MSE to join NEA for a few years, participating in training courses and programmes run by other agencies within the family, or even just mentoring and sharing sessions with peers, friends and leaders on their own aspects of work. This has been a great journey for me, and I would definitely encourage anyone with a heart for service, a passion for sustainability and an appetite for growth to consider it as well!”

“My 10 years with SFA and MSE are a testament to the dynamic and multifaceted nature of a career in sustainability and innovation.
My various roles in industry development and science & technology planning have not only contributed to Singapore’s national imperatives and economic competitiveness but they’ve also been a personal odyssey of growth and learning
From enhancing our resiliency in the food, water and environmental service sectors to embracing the challenges of climate change, I relished the opportunity to expand my knowledge beyond the agricultural sector and broaden my perspective as I coordinate with various stakeholders to set out concrete, coherent, and coordinated funding strategies for Research, Innovation, and Enterprise (RIE).
I am grateful for the chance to be a part of the MSE family, where the field of sustainability is so deeply interconnected. The varied career opportunities presented here have enabled me to delve into different aspects of sustainability, which has greatly enhanced my professional development and my contribution to Singapore's sustainable progress.”
